Importing route & map files

Last updated: October 25, 2026

Where importing happens

Drop a route file on the dashboard and Dibber creates the project with the track already imported — one step. Open a project and use the import section (step 1) whenever you need more control: the Route File task starts on the Local File tab (upload from your device), the Recent tab reuses a track you imported before, and the Map Image task takes a scan, photo or PDF of your paper map.

Route files: formats and limits

  • Supported: GPX, FIT, TCX, KML, KMZ, GeoJSON.
  • Maximum size: 20 MB per file.
  • You can pick or drop several route files at once — Dibber imports them one after another and reports each file's outcome (imported, failed or skipped as a duplicate within the batch).
  • After import Dibber computes distance, ascent and duration, and suggests a location and date from the track.

Garmin users: see importing Garmin data for how to export FIT/GPX/TCX from Garmin Connect.

Map images: formats and limits

  • Supported: PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, PDF (the batch importer also accepts TIFF and BMP).
  • Maximum size: 20 MB.
  • Larger images are automatically compressed (converted to JPEG with progressively reduced quality) until they fit — you'll see the before/after size.
  • Larger PDFs can't be auto-compressed, but they no longer get a flat rejection: Dibber opens a guided conversion where you pick the page you want and it is turned into a JPEG map image that fits the limit. The PDF itself is never stored — the page image becomes the map.

A map image is only useful once it sits in the right place on the base map — see aligning a map image.

Importing many files at once (batch)

In the new-project dialog, dropping more than one route file or more than one image switches to batch import automatically. Dibber classifies the files, lets you Link/Unlink which map image belongs to which route, and creates one project per pair. Note: the batch dialog accepts image formats but not PDF maps — add a PDF map inside the project afterwards.

Interrupted uploads are kept in your browser for 24 hours so you can pick up where you left off; they are cleared when you sign out or switch accounts.

Reusing a recent track

The Recent tab lists tracks you previously imported in any project, so the same route can back several projects without re-uploading. Search by file name to reach older tracks — the list covers your whole history, not just the first page.
