Recognizing text from a map

Last updated: October 25, 2026

What it does

In the Course Details task of the import section, Recognize Text from Map reads your uploaded map or course-sheet image and proposes up to nine fields:

  • Map scale
  • Contour interval
  • Map author
  • Map creation date
  • Event date
  • Location
  • Theoretical distance
  • Route category
  • Theoretical elevation change

Nothing is applied silently: each field can be Accepted, Rejected or Deleted individually (or accept/reject all at once). Location and Event date can alternatively be filled from the route itself. A raw-text viewer shows everything OCR read, in case a value needs manual typing.

Running in the background

Recognition runs as a background task — you can leave the screen and progress resumes when you return. If recognition is unavailable on this server (provider not configured), Dibber says so explicitly instead of failing silently.

Credits and quotas

  • Free: 1 successful recognition in total (introductory credit).
  • Plus: 20 recognitions per monthly period (your billing anniversary, not the calendar month).
  • Failed attempts cost nothing — only successful recognitions consume a credit.
  • Results are cached per image: re-running recognition on the same map image reuses the cached result and consumes no credit.

Your remaining quota is shown in Settings → Subscription. See Free vs Plus for the full picture.

Privacy

Recognition sends the map image only to the text-extraction providers (Google Cloud Vision and OpenAI) — never your GPS track. Details are in the privacy policy.
